What are aluminium reveal frames?

An aluminium reveal frame allows you to finish the outside of a window or door opening neatly. It covers the areas between the joinery and the front of the façade, ensuring that the two fit together neatly.

Cladix reveal frames are fully bespoke and are suitable for both new-build and refurbishment projects. You can combine them with aluminium cladding, but also with wood, uPVC, render or brickwork.

What is a skirting board?

The reveal is the space between the window or door frame and the front of the façade. How deep they are depends on the position of the window within the façade.

With a rebated frame, these surfaces are clad on the outside with aluminium sections that are folded to the dimensions of the opening. This creates a finished frame around the joinery.

The terms reveal frame, reveal cladding, reveal finish, aluminium reveal and window frame are often used in practice for the same or similar solutions.

A frame with a top and bottom edge can consist of three or four sides:

  • 3-sided: a top and two sides. At the bottom, for example, there is a separate window sill or threshold.
  • 4-sided: a top panel, two side panels and an aluminium sill combine to form a single finish.

At Cladix, both versions are made to measure, with a depth ranging from 100 to 350 mm.

How is an aluminium reveal frame made?

At Cladix, aluminium reveal frames are custom-made in five stages: measuring, cutting, bending, welding (if required) and powder coating. Each frame is tailored to the window or door opening, the façade structure and the chosen installation method.

  • Determining production sizes
First, we determine the width, height and depth of the frame, the number of sides and the necessary connections. The dimensions of the window opening are not necessarily the same as the manufacturing dimensions of the reveal frame.
  • Cutting aluminium to size
We cut the aluminium sheets to size based on the final production dimensions.
  • Folding the parts
Next, we fold the aluminium to form the sides, the top and, in the case of a four-sided frame, the bottom edge.
  • Finishing the CRW or CRH system

In the event of a welded CRW reveal frame We weld the parts together to form a single prefabricated unit. We then sand down the welds so that the corners blend smoothly into one another. The welded corners ensure the frame is watertight.

In the event of a Crocheted CRH day-side frame The components remain separate. Thanks to the hook connection, the fitter can assemble them on site or in the workshop. This makes CRH more compact for transport and more cost-effective to produce.
  • Powder coating and inspection
Finally, the complete CRW frame or the individual CRH components are powder-coated on both sides in the chosen colour.

What colour can I choose for my aluminium reveal?

You can match the colour of the frame to the window, the cladding or other façade elements.

Cladix offers five standard colours from stock: jet black RAL 9005, walnut brown, white RAL 9010, light grey RAL 7035 and dark grey RAL 7016. Other RAL colours are available on request.

It is best not to judge a colour from a screen. A physical colour sample will give you a better idea of the shade, sheen and how it combines with the other façade materials.

Frequently asked questions about recessed frames

Yes. Aluminium reveal frames can be combined with, amongst other things, timber, plastic cladding, render and brickwork.

Yes. They can be used in both renovation and new-build projects. In renovation projects, the existing structure around the window helps to determine how you measure and fit the frame.

That depends on the system chosen. A welded CRW window frame has welded corners and forms a single watertight unit. A hooked CRH window frame is not watertight. With this type of frame, the window reveals must be treated with watertight EPDM before installation.
