In Belgium, around 10,000 fires occur every year. Often the fire spreads not only inside, but also through the fa\u00e7ade to other parts of the building. This phenomenon is called&nbsp;<strong>fire spread<\/strong>&nbsp;and is a major risk especially in low-rise projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is therefore crucial to consider the&nbsp;<strong>fire safety of facade cladding<\/strong>. How do different materials react to fire? And why does aluminium constitute a safe choice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should cladding be fireproof?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The question sounds simple, but the answer requires nuance. Fa\u00e7ade cladding in itself need not&nbsp;<strong>fireproof<\/strong>&nbsp;to be - that concept is about the fire resistance of an entire structure (facade + supporting structure + insulation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What cladding is all about is&nbsp;<strong>burning behaviour<\/strong>: does the material contribute to the spread of fire or not? In low-rise buildings, therefore, the main issue is to limit&nbsp;<strong>fire spread through the facade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flammable vs non-combustible: the difference<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every cladding reacts the same way to fire. Fire behaviour determines whether a facade helps fire spread or slows it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wood (class D\/E)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Combustible material that can catch fire and actively feed the fire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When there is a fire, wood acts as fuel, causing fire to spread faster.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dangerous in low-rise buildings because fire spread along the fa\u00e7ade can occur very quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plastic or composite<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Melts at high temperatures and may drip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These droplets are often burning and can cause additional fires.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moreover, toxic smoke is released, complicating evacuation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stone and fibre cement<br><\/strong>Non-flammable and completely dimensionally stable at high temperatures. Does not contribute to flame spread, thus reducing the risk of fire spread.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aluminium (class A1\/A2)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Non-combustible and non-flammable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can melt but does not catch fire or spread smoke.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The conclusion is clear: where wood and plastic can strengthen a fire, aluminium remains a <strong>passive material<\/strong> that does not accelerate the fire. This makes it particularly suitable for house facades, garden houses and extensions, where <strong>fire spread<\/strong> often poses the greatest risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens to aluminium in case of fire?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aluminium has a melting point of about&nbsp;<strong>660\u00b0C<\/strong>. So in the event of a very severe fire, it can deform or melt. But more importantly: aluminium&nbsp;<strong>does not burn<\/strong>&nbsp;and does not develop smoke or droplets that cause the fire to spread further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes aluminium a safe material for cladding, especially in homes where&nbsp;<strong>fire spread to other facades<\/strong>&nbsp;is a real risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aluminium cladding and the supporting structure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall fire safety of a facade also depends on the&nbsp;<strong>rear construction<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Timber support structure<\/strong>: flammable \u2192 the outer layer (aluminium) is non-combustible, but the wood behind it can still catch fire in a prolonged fire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aluminium support structure<\/strong>: completely non-combustible \u2192 the entire facade construction does not contribute to fire spread.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For maximum fire safety (and thus minimum risk of fire spread), a&nbsp;<strong>aluminium support structure<\/strong>&nbsp;the best choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">European fire classes and aluminium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Europe, fire behaviour of materials is indicated by fire classes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A1<\/strong>: completely incombustible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A2<\/strong>: virtually non-combustible, very limited contribution to fire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>B to E<\/strong>: flammable to varying degrees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F<\/strong>: no classification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aluminium cladding falls into the highest categories (A1\/A2)<\/strong>&nbsp;and is thus&nbsp;<strong>non-combustible<\/strong>. This means that aluminium does not spread fire, nor does it produce droplets or toxic fumes like some plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aesthetics and safety need not clash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is sometimes a perception that fire-safe solutions come at the expense of design. But this need not be the case at all.&nbsp;<strong>Aluminium cladding<\/strong>&nbsp;combines both worlds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A sleek, modern look in timeless black.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A material that&nbsp;<strong>non-combustible<\/strong>&nbsp;is and does not accelerate a fire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suitable for cladding homes, garden houses, extensions as well as renovations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So with aluminium, you choose a facade that not only looks beautiful, but also contributes to peace of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smart choice for now and later<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aluminium cladding is&nbsp;<strong>non-combustible (A1\/A2)<\/strong>&nbsp;and therefore a particularly safe choice for your facade.
